New Delhi: In a significant development, Member of Parliament Ghulam Ali Khatana participated in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting held to deliberate on the proposed Waqf Amendment Act 2024. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Law & Justice, who presented their views on the amendments aimed at enhancing the governance and transparency of Waqf properties across the country.

The JPC, comprising members from both houses of Parliament, is tasked with reviewing the provisions of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, which seeks to introduce significant changes to the existing Waqf Act. The proposed amendments focus on ensuring better management, accountability, and protection of Waqf properties.

During the meeting, Ghulam Ali Khatana, a prominent leader and a dedicated voice for the welfare of minorities, actively participated in discussions. He emphasized the importance of implementing robust mechanisms to safeguard Waqf assets, which are considered vital for the socio-economic upliftment of minority communities.

Key Discussions:

1. Transparency and Digitization: Khatana advocated for increased transparency in the management of Waqf properties and suggested leveraging technology for digitizing records. This, he argued, would help in reducing disputes and ensuring proper utilization of these properties.

2. Accountability Measures: He also called for stricter accountability measures to prevent misuse or mismanagement of Waqf assets, urging a more streamlined approach in their administration.

3. Consultation with Stakeholders: The MP stressed the importance of involving stakeholders, including Waqf Boards and minority community representatives, in framing rules and policies under the amended act.

The representatives from the Ministry of Minority Affairs outlined the objectives of the amendments, which include addressing gaps in the existing legislation and aligning it with contemporary needs. The Ministry of Law & Justice provided legal insights and assured the committee of their support in fine-tuning the bill for effective implementation.

Speaking after the meeting, Ghulam Ali Khatana expressed optimism about the proposed amendments, stating, "The Waqf Amendment Act 2024 is a crucial step towards ensuring the integrity and better management of Waqf properties. It reflects the government’s commitment to protecting minority interests while promoting inclusivity and development."

The JPC is expected to continue its deliberations and submit a detailed report to Parliament in the coming weeks. The amendments, once finalized, are anticipated to bring about transformative changes in the functioning of Waqf Boards and the overall administration of Waqf properties in India.

This meeting underscores the government's focus on empowering minorities and addressing long-standing issues related to Waqf property management.
