Omar Abdullah Reviews Housing & Urban Development Initiatives, Stresses on Enhanced Town Planning
30.10.2024, Jammu and Kashmir: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently conducted a thorough review of the ongoing initiatives under the Housing and Urban Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir. In this high-level meeting attended by key department officials and urban planning experts, Abdullah emphasized the need for a strengthened approach toward town planning. This, he stated, is essential for managing rapid urbanization across the Union Territory.

The meeting delved into various facets of urban development, addressing the pressing issues faced by cities and towns due to an increasing population. Abdullah highlighted the critical role that efficient town planning plays in creating sustainable and livable urban areas. He noted that with the growing urban sprawl, proactive measures are required to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with development. He further urged authorities to prioritize long-term urban planning frameworks that can better manage future growth.

Abdullah reviewed multiple projects under the Housing and Urban Development umbrella, assessing their progress and challenges. The review covered aspects such as waste management, public sanitation, housing schemes, and urban infrastructure projects. Stressing on the need for coordination across departments, he advocated for collaborative efforts to ensure the timely completion of these initiatives.

In his remarks, Abdullah called for a data-driven approach to town planning that involves the latest technology and mapping techniques. He suggested employing Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to track urban growth and resource allocation. This, he believes, will improve efficiency in project planning and execution, ultimately leading to better service delivery for citizens.

Abdullah also directed the officials to focus on affordable housing, particularly for economically disadvantaged groups. He reiterated that urban development must be inclusive, ensuring that low-income families have access to essential services and decent living conditions.

The review concluded with Abdullah encouraging the department to present an updated roadmap that aligns with both current and future urban needs. He assured the Housing and Urban Development officials of his continued support in implementing policies that promote balanced and sustainable urbanization across Jammu and Kashmir.
