PM Modi Expresses Displeasure Over NCERT Content; Political Reactions Intensify Nationwide
New Delhi, February 26: A fresh controversy has emerged at the national level after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly expressed displeasure over certain content included in an NCERT textbook. The development has sparked political debate across the country, with opposition leaders questioning curriculum changes and the government defending academic reforms.
According to sources, the Prime Minister took serious note of specific portions in a Class 8 textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) that allegedly discussed sensitive aspects related to the judiciary. He is said to have sought clarification from the concerned authorities, emphasizing the need for balanced and age-appropriate material for school students.
Government’s Stand
Officials from the Education Ministry stated that curriculum revisions are part of an ongoing process aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP). They clarified that textbook updates are carried out after expert consultations and are aimed at modernizing content while maintaining academic standards.
The government maintains that the objective is to ensure factual accuracy, neutrality, and relevance in the education system.
Opposition Reaction
The controversy intensified after opposition voices reacted strongly. Political commentator and former AAP leader Ashutosh criticized the curriculum revision process, alleging that changes reflect ideological priorities.
He stated that altering the curriculum has been a long-standing agenda of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological affiliate, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). According to him, educational reforms should be guided by academic consensus rather than political considerations.
Wider Debate on Curriculum Reforms
This is not the first time NCERT textbook revisions have triggered nationwide discussions. Over the past few years, several changes in history, political science, and sociology textbooks have led to debates about academic autonomy and transparency.
Education experts emphasize that while curriculum updates are necessary in a dynamic society, transparency and public consultation are essential to maintain trust in the education system.
As the issue continues to unfold, attention remains focused on balancing educational integrity, constitutional values, and suitability for young learners.
