TikTok Remains Banned in India Despite Website Access
New Delhi, August 23, 2025:
Confusion arose on Friday after several users in India reported being able to access TikTok’s homepage without using a VPN. However, the government and TikTok’s parent company ByteDance have clarified that the platform remains banned in the country.

Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stated that no order has been issued to lift the ban and described the reports of TikTok’s return as “false and misleading.” ByteDance also confirmed that it has not restored access in India and continues to comply with local laws.

Experts believe the temporary access may have been due to a technical glitch or network misconfiguration, similar to incidents reported in the past.

TikTok, which once had nearly 200 million users in India, was banned in June 2020 along with 58 other Chinese apps on grounds of national security and data privacy. Since then, homegrown platforms such as Moj, Josh, Roposo, and Chingari have gained popularity in the short-video market.

The government has reaffirmed that the ban remains in force, and TikTok has no official plans to resume operations in India.
