Ladakh, September 26:
Prominent environmentalist and social reformer Sonam Wangchuk, widely acclaimed for his innovative initiatives like the "Ice Stupa" and his pioneering work in education, has been arrested by the police today.
The arrest comes in the backdrop of ongoing protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. In recent days, the demonstrations turned violent, leading to the death of four people.
Wangchuk was scheduled to address a press conference at 2:30 PM today, but he was taken into custody beforehand. Authorities have accused him of inciting violence during the protests.
Police have also confirmed that his organization’s FCRA license has been cancelled. Meanwhile, curfew-like restrictions have been imposed across Ladakh to maintain law and order.
The arrest has triggered widespread debate, with many questioning whether this move is aimed at maintaining peace or at silencing a leading voice of the region.
Wangchuk, often described as the voice of Ladakh, has alleged that he is being made a scapegoat in the ongoing crisis.
