Omar Abdullah Criticizes Government's Approach to Rohingya Refugees in Jammu
Jammu, December 9, 2024 – Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed deep concern over the government's ongoing crackdown on Rohingya refugees residing in Jammu. Addressing the sensitive issue, Abdullah called for a more humane approach in dealing with the displaced community, urging the central government to avoid treating them inhumanely.

“It’s a humanitarian issue. If the central government wants to send them back, then they should do so, but if they can’t, they must not let them suffer in winter. You can’t just kill them in this harsh season. You will have to take care of them till they are here,” Abdullah remarked during an interaction with the press.

Context of the Rohingya Crisis

The Rohingyas, a persecuted minority group from Myanmar, have fled their home country in large numbers to escape violence and discrimination. Many sought refuge in India, particularly in Jammu, where their presence has been a contentious topic. Some political parties and groups allege that their settlement poses security concerns, leading to demands for their deportation.

Call for Humane Treatment

Abdullah emphasized that the Rohingyas are human beings and must not be treated like animals. He criticized any policies or actions that disregard their basic rights. “If the policies have changed now, then do things accordingly but don’t treat them like animals. They are humans,” he added.

Crackdown Amid Harsh Winters

The central and state governments have recently intensified efforts to identify and detain Rohingyas living in Jammu. Reports suggest many families, including women and children, are being sent to detention centers under the premise of deportation. With temperatures in Jammu plummeting during winter, concerns have been raised about the humanitarian implications of these actions.

Political Reactions

Omar Abdullah’s statement adds to the growing political discourse around the treatment of refugees in India. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government insists on addressing security and demographic concerns, opposition leaders like Abdullah are advocating for a balanced approach that respects human rights.

The Way Forward

As the Rohingya issue continues to spark debate, Abdullah’s comments highlight the need for a compassionate and practical solution. Whether through coordinated international efforts for their repatriation or improved conditions for their temporary stay, the government faces the challenge of managing a sensitive issue without compromising on humanitarian values.

This development comes as global attention remains fixed on how nations manage refugee crises amidst rising geopolitical tensions and humanitarian concerns.
