Srinagar, October 5, 2026: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has formally prorogued the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Srinagar, issued a bulletin on Monday, October 5, 2026, informing the public about the order issued by the Lieutenant Governor.
According to the order, dated October 1, 2026, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him under clause (a) of sub-section (2) of Section 18 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, has prorogued the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
The order states that the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir stands prorogued by the Lieutenant Governor.
The latest development follows the conclusion of the Autumn Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, which witnessed discussions on several important issues concerning the Union Territory.
During the session, legislators raised various public-interest matters and discussed issues related to development, governance and the concerns of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
It is important to note that prorogation is different from dissolution of the Assembly. Prorogation formally brings a particular session of the Legislative Assembly to an end, while the Assembly itself continues to remain in existence.
The order was issued under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, and has been circulated by the Legislative Assembly Secretariat for general information.
The official order was signed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and carries the reference number LA-6022-6060/Legn/2026, dated October 5, 2026.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will continue to function as the elected legislative institution of the Union Territory, with its next session to be convened in accordance with the applicable constitutional and legal provisions.
