New Delhi: The debate over the quality of education in government schools has once again raised an important question: Can regular Teacher Eligibility Tests help improve the quality of teaching and education in government schools?

A section of education stakeholders believes that periodic eligibility or competency assessments for government school teachers could help ensure that teachers remain updated with subject knowledge, teaching methods and changing educational requirements.

Supporters argue that such assessments could identify areas where teachers need additional training and professional development. They also believe that continuous evaluation may contribute to improving classroom teaching and learning outcomes.

However, others argue that examinations alone cannot guarantee better education. Proper teacher training, adequate school infrastructure, sufficient teaching resources and supportive working conditions are equally important for improving the overall education system.

The issue has therefore sparked a wider discussion among parents, teachers and education stakeholders.
