Jammu, August 17, 2026: Jammu Police intensified its crackdown on the illegal sale, possession and transportation of liquor during the dry day declared ahead of Independence Day, when all licensed wine shops remained closed. During intensified naka checking, police foiled multiple attempts to transport and stock liquor illegally and seized a total of 2,781 quarters/bottles of liquor, besides illicit desi liquor.
During naka checking at Rah Salyote, police apprehended Rahul Sharma alias Kaka, son of Subash Chander, a resident of Rah, Tehsil Chowki Choura, District Jammu, after he allegedly attempted to flee on a Scooty bearing registration number JK02DS-6847.
A search led to the recovery of 63 quarters of liquor, each measuring 180 ml. During interrogation, the accused reportedly disclosed the location of a hideout near his residence where additional liquor had been concealed.
Acting on the disclosure, a police team conducted a search of the hideout and recovered approximately 2,654 additional bottles/quarters of liquor. In connection with the recovery, FIR No. 206/2026 under Section 48-A of the Excise Act was registered at Police Station Akhnoor.
In another action, police intercepted a motorcycle bearing registration number JK02DA-5575 at around 8:15 pm. The motorcycle was being driven by Surjeet Singh alias Sunny, son of Kartar Singh, a resident of Devipur, Tehsil Jourian, District Jammu. The rider allegedly attempted to flee after noticing the police naka.
A search of a bag hanging from the motorcycle resulted in the recovery of seven quarters of JK Desi Whisky, each measuring 180 ml, along with two litres of illicit desi liquor. Police registered FIR No. 205/2026 under Section 48(a) of the Excise Act at Police Station Akhnoor.
Police said two more cases had earlier been registered as part of the dry-day enforcement drive.
FIR No. 203/2026 under Section 48(f) of the Excise Act was registered against Madan Lal, son of Tej Ram, resident of Lehar Sungal, Akhnoor, and Sanjay Kumar, son of Chaman Lal, resident of Karangi, Akhnoor.
Similarly, FIR No. 204/2026 under Sections 48(a)/(f) of the Excise Act was registered against Deputy Ram, son of Feru Ram, resident of Naiwala Colony. Police recovered 57 quarters of liquor in this case.
The latest action highlights Jammu Police's continued efforts to curb the illegal liquor trade and enforce dry-day restrictions. Police have reiterated that strict action will be taken against individuals involved in the illegal possession, sale or transportation of liquor.
