BJP MP Ghulam Ali Khatana Questions Omar Abdullah Over High Electricity Bills in J&K

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana has questioned the Jammu and Kashmir administration over high electricity bills being faced by consumers, particularly poor households.

Khatana said the issue should be raised directly with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the electricity portfolio. He argued that the regulatory authority in Jammu and Kashmir is empowered to take decisions related to electricity tariffs and maintained that the Union Government in Delhi has no role in determining these charges.

“Ask Omar Abdullah. He is the state’s Electricity Minister, and the state regulatory authority is empowered to make these decisions. Delhi has no role in this matter,” Khatana said.

Questioning the burden on ordinary consumers, the BJP MP asked why a poor person should be charged ₹1,000 or ₹1,200 when their actual electricity consumption may amount to only around ₹100.

Khatana urged people to directly question the Omar Abdullah-led administration over the electricity billing system and demanded clarity on why consumers are receiving significantly higher bills.

His remarks come amid concerns among sections of consumers in Jammu and Kashmir over rising electricity costs and household electricity bills.
