Anantnag Police Crack Down on Narcotics; Drug Peddler Held, Illegal Opium Poppy Crop Destroyed



Anantnag, June 12: Continuing its intensified campaign against drug trafficking and narcotics-related activities, Anantnag Police achieved two major successes in the jurisdictions of Police Station Mattan and Police Station Larnoo.
In the first operation, a police patrol team intercepted a suspicious individual on the Kehribal–Rambirpora Mattan Road during routine patrolling. The suspect attempted to flee upon noticing the police presence but was swiftly apprehended. During the search, police recovered a charas-like substance from his possession.
The accused was identified as Owais Ahmad Khan, son of Mohd Yaseen Khan, a resident of Kehribal, Mattan. A case under FIR No. 67/2026 has been registered at Police Station Mattan, and further investigation is underway.
In a separate action, acting on specific intelligence, Police Station Larnoo detected illegal cultivation of opium poppy plants in a kitchen garden spread over approximately four marlas of land at Leesu Branar, Mattan. The land was allegedly owned by Gh Mohammad Lone, son of Mohammad Ismaeel Lone.
Following the discovery, FIR No. 39/2026 under Section 8/18(C) of the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Larnoo. After completing all legal formalities, the illicit crop was destroyed on the spot in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, an Agriculture Officer, and independent witnesses.
Anantnag Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking, substance abuse, and the illegal cultivation of narcotic plants. The police also appealed to the public to continue supporting anti-drug efforts by providing information about narcotics-related activities.
