New Delhi, May 30: Indian mango exports to Japan have suffered a setback after Japanese authorities suspended imports due to concerns over quarantine and pest-control compliance at treatment facilities.
Japan had originally banned Indian mangoes in 1986 over fears of fruit fly infestation. The ban was lifted in 2006 after years of negotiations and the implementation of strict phytosanitary measures.
However, recent inspections reportedly identified shortcomings in the treatment and certification processes required for exporting mangoes to Japan. As a result, shipments of popular Indian mango varieties, including Alphonso and Kesar, have been affected.
Officials from both countries are expected to continue discussions to address the concerns and restore normal trade. The development comes during the peak mango export season, creating challenges for Indian exporters targeting the Japanese market.
