Women’s Reservation Push May Expand Lok Sabha to 816 Seats: Who Gains and Who Loses?

In a major political development, the Government of India is reportedly exploring a proposal to increase the total number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to nearly 816. This move is being considered as part of the implementation of the Women’s Reservation policy, which aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in Parliament.
The proposal is closely linked to the upcoming Census and the long-pending Delimitation exercise, which will redraw constituency boundaries based on population changes.

Currently, implementing 33% reservation within the existing 543 seats could lead to the reduction of seats available to male candidates, potentially triggering political resistance. Increasing the total number of seats is seen as a way to balance representation without significantly affecting existing political structures.
However, this move is expected to have major political implications.
States with higher population growth, particularly in North India such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, are likely to gain more seats under delimitation. This would increase their representation and influence in Parliament.

On the other hand, southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh may face relative losses in political weight, as they have successfully controlled population growth over the years.

The proposal has already sparked debate, with concerns over regional imbalance, fairness, and the broader impact on India’s federal structure.

While the Women’s Reservation Bill marks a historic step toward gender equality in politics, its implementation through seat expansion and delimitation could redefine the country’s political landscape for decades to come.
