Jk Update News : J&K Govt Forms Committee to Finalize Place Names for Official Maps in Hindi & Urdu

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir, through the General Administration Department (Civil Secretariat), has issued Government Order No. 815-JK(GAD) of 2026, dated April 21, 2026, announcing the constitution of a committee for the verification and finalization of place names across the Union Territory.

The main objective of this committee is to standardize the spelling of place names in Jammu & Kashmir and ensure their accurate translation into Hindi and Urdu for the preparation of official maps.

📌 Committee Composition

The committee comprises the following members:

1. Director, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Geo-Spatial Directorate, Survey of India – Convenor

2. Mr. Gulzar Ahmad Dar (JKAS), Special Secretary, Planning Development & Monitoring Department – Member

3. Dr. Anju Sharma Thappa, Professor, Department of Hindi, Centre for Distance & Online Education, University of Jammu – Member

4. Dr. Mushtaq Hussain Magloo, Assistant Professor, Department of Urdu, University of Kashmir – Member

🎯 Terms of Reference

The committee has been assigned the following key responsibilities:

- To examine and finalize the standardized spelling of place names in Jammu & Kashmir in Hindi and Urdu.

- To ensure consistency with existing official records, maps, and government notifications.

- To verify the translation of descriptive remarks from English into Hindi and Urdu.

- To maintain accuracy, uniformity, and proper terminology in translations.

📜 Official Authorization

The order has been issued by the order of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir and is formally signed by M. Raju (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary to the Government.

- A copy of the order has been forwarded to the Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, J&K.
