Historic Belian Bridge Inaugurated in Samba, Connecting Remote Villages After 75 Years

Samba, Jammu & Kashmir: In a significant milestone for rural infrastructure and connectivity, MLA Samba Surjit Singh Slathia inaugurated the long-awaited Belian Suspension Bridge over the Basanter River, bringing relief and new opportunities to thousands of residents in the region.
The bridge connects several villages including Dabun, Belian, Souram, Samotha, Jeed, Zaara, and Kamtha, which had remained largely cut off during the rainy season due to the swelling waters of the Basanter River. For decades, locals had been demanding a permanent solution to safely cross the river, especially during floods.

Before the construction of the bridge, villagers — including school children — were forced to risk their lives while crossing the river. Tragically, a young boy had also lost his life in the past while attempting to cross during high water levels.

With the inauguration of this suspension bridge, a 75-year-old demand of the people has finally been fulfilled. The structure now ensures safe, all-weather connectivity, improving access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets, and other essential services.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Surjit Singh Slathia described the project as a “historic achievement” and a major step towards inclusive development in rural areas.

Local residents expressed immense happiness and gratitude, calling the bridge a “lifeline” that will transform daily life and end decades of hardship.
