Omar Abdullah Reacts to Revocation of Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention

Srinagar, March 2026:
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reacted to the decision of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to revoke the detention of Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA).

Speaking on the development, Omar Abdullah said that Sonam Wangchuk should never have been arrested in the first place. He described the arrest as wrong and welcomed the government’s decision to withdraw the detention order.

The Chief Minister stated that revoking the detention was the right step, emphasizing that activists raising issues concerning their region should be heard through dialogue rather than strict legal measures.
Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known engineer, innovator and education reform advocate from Ladakh, had been detained earlier under the NSA following protests and demonstrations in the region.

The revocation of his detention has triggered discussions in political circles, with several leaders calling for constructive dialogue and peaceful engagement to address concerns related to Ladakh.

The development is being seen as an attempt to ease tensions and promote stability in the region.
