Sonam Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) following a law and order situation in Leh.
According to an official statement issued by the government, Wangchuk had already completed nearly half of the prescribed detention period. After careful consideration, the government decided to revoke the detention order to encourage constructive dialogue and maintain normalcy in the region.

The statement further noted that the government has been actively engaging with various community leaders, stakeholders and representatives from Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people.

Officials expressed hope that issues related to the region will be resolved through peaceful discussions and mechanisms such as the High-Powered Committee, which has been constituted to deliberate on matters concerning Ladakh.
Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Union Territory, the government emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability and mutual trust among all stakeholders to facilitate meaningful dialogue and development in the region.
