In a significant move aimed at providing relief to the public amid ongoing economic challenges, the Government of India has announced a sharp reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a “courageous and sensitive decision” to ease the burden on citizens.
According to the official notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the excise duty on petrol has been reduced from ₹13 per litre to ₹3 per litre.
Meanwhile, the excise duty on diesel has been completely eliminated, bringing it down from ₹10 per litre to zero.
The notification, dated March 26, 2026, confirms that the revised rates have come into effect immediately. The decision is expected to bring down fuel prices and provide much-needed relief to households and businesses affected by rising costs.
Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that India had set an example during the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasized that the country continues to take proactive steps in challenging times.
He added that this measure reflects the government’s commitment to supporting the common man.
Experts believe that the reduction in fuel taxes could have a positive ripple effect on inflation, transportation costs, and overall economic activity.
