Union Cabinet Approves Proposal to Rename Kerala as "Keralam"
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a proposal to rename the southern state of Kerala as “Keralam”.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the decision begins the constitutional process required for the name change. The proposed Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 will now be sent to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for its opinion, as required under Article 3 of the Constitution of India.
After receiving the Assembly’s views, the Centre will seek the President’s recommendation before introducing the bill in Parliament for final approval.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly had earlier passed a unanimous resolution requesting the Centre to officially rename the state as “Keralam,” reflecting the name used in the Malayalam language and aligning with the state’s cultural and linguistic identity.
If passed by Parliament, Kerala will officially be known as “Keralam” in all constitutional and official documents.
