Sam Altman Says Superintelligence Could Arrive Within Years, Calls for AI Democratization

New Delhi: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made bold remarks about the future of artificial intelligence during an AI Summit held in Delhi, stating that the world may be only a few years away from the early forms of real superintelligence.
Speaking about the rapid progress in AI development, Altman said, “Based on the current trajectory, we believe we may be just a few years away from early versions of real superintelligence. If we are right, by the end of 2028, most of the world’s intellectual capacity could reside in data centers rather than in human minds.”
He acknowledged that the prediction is significant and could be wrong, but emphasized that the possibility should be taken seriously and prepared for responsibly.
Altman further noted that there may come a time when superintelligent AI systems outperform corporate leaders and top scientists. “There could be a point when superintelligence becomes better than a major company’s CEO or even our best scientists in conducting research,” he said.
Highlighting the need for responsible development, the OpenAI chief stressed three key principles, with the first being the democratization of AI — ensuring that the technology is accessible to everyone. He warned that if advanced AI remains concentrated within a single company or country, it could become dangerous.
Altman emphasized the importance of building a future over the coming decades that promotes freedom, democracy, shared prosperity, and human empowerment through AI, rather than centralizing power.
The remarks have sparked global discussion on the opportunities and risks associated with rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technologies.
