Jammu, February 17: The growing menace of monkeys in Samba district has led to large-scale destruction of standing crops, causing serious distress among farmers. Raising the matter in the Legislative Assembly, Samba constituency MLA Surjit Singh Slathia highlighted the alarming situation and demanded immediate government intervention.
Speaking in the House, the MLA stated that farmers across several villages are suffering heavy losses as monkeys continue to damage crops in agricultural fields. He said that the situation has become so severe that many farmers are being forced to abandon cultivation, resulting in fertile land gradually turning barren.
Slathia urged the government to introduce a new policy framework and formulate strict legal provisions to effectively control the monkey menace. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and long-term solution, including preventive measures and support mechanisms for affected farmers.
The legislator further pointed out that agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for many families in Samba, and unchecked crop destruction could severely impact the rural economy. He called upon the concerned departments to conduct a detailed assessment of the losses and implement immediate relief measures.
The issue has sparked concern among farmers, who are demanding swift action to safeguard their crops and protect their lands from further damage.
