Dhaka, February 13, 2026:
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a sweeping victory in Bangladesh’s 13th general election, the country’s first competitive poll since the overthrow of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Official results from the Election Commission confirmed that the BNP-led alliance secured 212 seats in the 300-member parliament, returning the party to power after two decades.
The rival alliance, led by Jamaat-e-Islami, won 77 seats. Polling was largely peaceful and recorded a 59.4% voter turnout, significantly higher than the previous election. Overseas and postal voting were allowed for the first time, with postal participation exceeding 80%.
BNP leader Tarique Rahman, who returned from exile in December, is poised to become the next prime minister. The election followed months of political upheaval after a student-led uprising in 2024 ended Hasina’s 15-year rule. An interim administration headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus oversaw the transition.
India, the United States and Pakistan congratulated the BNP on its victory. The new government faces challenges including restoring democratic institutions, ensuring law and order, and reviving the economy.
