Jammu, December 23: Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, today chaired a review meeting at the Civil Secretariat to assess and address pressing drinking water–related issues in various localities of Jammu.
The Minister impressed upon the concerned officers the need to formulate both short-term and long-term strategies to ensure that the existing as well as future drinking water requirements of the city are met in a sustainable manner. He underscored the importance of ensuring a regular, adequate and reliable water supply for the public and directed officials to respond promptly and effectively to public grievances.
During the deliberations, the Minister reviewed the proposal for the permanent restoration of the Sitlee Water Treatment Plant and instructed the concerned authorities to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) at the earliest to facilitate timely execution of the project.
To further augment drinking water supply in Chaman Vihar and adjoining areas, the Minister directed that the pumping water station be made fully operational within a week. He noted that once functional, the project would substantially alleviate water scarcity issues faced by residents in the area.
Emphasising efficient utilisation of available resources, the Minister stressed that all development initiatives must translate into visible and tangible benefits for people on the ground. He also highlighted the need for expeditious completion of procedural and administrative formalities to ensure early implementation of approved projects.
Reviewing another key intervention, the Minister discussed the construction of a sump tank at Kamdhenu, observing that upon completion, the facility would address drinking water concerns not only in Kamdhenu but also in surrounding areas. He added that such infrastructure projects should be planned with broader coverage to maximise public benefit and improve overall quality of life.
The Minister also took note of issues raised by MLA Jammu West, Arvind Gupta, and assured that all genuine concerns pertaining to drinking water supply would be examined carefully and addressed on priority.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Omar Abdullah-led government to provide safe and clean drinking water to all citizens, the Minister directed officers to maintain close coordination and adhere strictly to timelines to ensure timely delivery of relief to the public.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Engineer, PHE, Superintending Engineers, and other senior officers of the department.
