Mexico Establishes Federal Republic with First Constitution in 1824

On October 4, 1824, Mexico officially adopted its first federal constitution, establishing the United Mexican States as a federal republic. The constitution replaced the short-lived monarchy of Agustín de Iturbide and laid the foundation for a republican form of government.

The 1824 Constitution divided power among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, created a bicameral Congress, and established the office of President and Vice President. It also declared Roman Catholicism as the nation’s official religion.

Guadalupe Victoria became the country’s first President, with Nicolás Bravo as Vice President. The adoption of this constitution marked a significant step in Mexico’s political evolution, providing a framework for federalism and symbolizing the nation’s sovereignty and independence.
