The German Army today launched Operation Typhoon, a massive offensive aimed at capturing the Soviet capital, Moscow.

Under the command of Adolf Hitler’s high command, nearly two million German troops, along with thousands of tanks, artillery, and aircraft, began their advance towards Moscow. The plan was to encircle Soviet forces near Vyazma and Bryansk, destroy them, and open the road to the Soviet capital.

In the first phase, German forces succeeded in encircling large sections of the Red Army, taking around 600,000 Soviet soldiers as casualties or prisoners. However, the advance soon slowed down as autumn rains turned the ground into thick mud, halting the German tanks and supply lines.

By November, freezing winter conditions worsened the situation. The German troops, unprepared for the harsh Russian cold, struggled severely. Meanwhile, the Soviets brought in fresh, well-trained reinforcements from Siberia to strengthen Moscow’s defenses.

In December 1941, the Red Army launched a powerful counter-offensive, forcing the Germans to retreat from the gates of Moscow.

🔴 Outcome: Operation Typhoon ended in failure. It marked the first major defeat of Hitler’s forces in World War II and proved that the Soviet Union would not fall easily.
