Major Breakthrough by Jammu Police, South Zone: Hardcore Criminal Arrested, 07 Stolen Vehicles & 26 Tower Batteries Worth ₹35 Lakh Recovered
Jammu, September 22, 2025:
In a significant crackdown on theft and organized crime, Jammu Police, South Zone, achieved a major breakthrough after apprehending a hardcore criminal and recovering stolen property worth around ₹35 lakh.

Police Station Bahu Fort, during routine patrolling on September 17 in Pir Bagh Colony, Bathindi, noticed a suspicious individual attempting to evade the police team. When approached for verification, the accused resisted violently, spraying a harmful substance into the eyes of a police officer and attacking the team with an iron rod, injuring SGCT Mohd. Arshad. Despite his resistance, the suspect was overpowered and arrested.

He was identified as Basharat Mahmood, son of Kabir Hussain, resident of Niru Jaal, Rajouri, presently living in Bathindi, Jammu. A case FIR No. 276/2025 U/S 109/121/123/BNS was registered at PS Bahu Fort.

Recoveries Made

On sustained questioning, the accused confessed to multiple thefts, leading to the recovery of:

1. Alto (Silver Grey) – JK02AD-4022 (Stolen from Bari Brahmana, Vijaypur)


2. Alto (White) – JK02AD-2596 (Stolen from Qasim Nagar, Bagh-e-Bahu)


3. Ecco Van – JK02AU-0305 (Stolen from Julhaka Mohalla, Gujjar Nagar)


4. Alto (Grey) – JK02Q-7636 (Stolen from Trikuta Nagar)


5. Scooty (Black) – JK11H-3121 (Stolen from Rajouri)


6. Wagon-R (Dark Grey) – PB06H-5353 (Stolen from Pathankot, Punjab)


7. Alto (Red, without number) – Engine No. 3365809 (Stolen along with co-accused)



In addition, 26 stolen telecom tower batteries were recovered from one of the vehicles.

Criminal Background

The accused is a notorious habitual offender with 18 FIRs registered against him in multiple police stations. He had even managed to escape earlier from police custody at the Hon’ble High Court premises, highlighting his dangerous criminal mindset.

The recovery of tower batteries brings relief to telecom companies and residents who had been facing frequent service disruptions due to theft.

Police Effort

The successful arrest and recovery were carried out by SHO Bahu Fort and In-Charge Police Post Bathindi, under the supervision of SDPO City East and SP City South Jammu, with overall command of SSP Jammu.

Jammu Police has urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate in curbing thefts by:

Using registered parking spaces and ensuring vehicles are properly locked.

Keeping valuables secure at home and avoiding easy exposure.

Reporting theft incidents immediately without disturbing the crime scene.
