Jammu, September 7: Sky watchers in Jammu and Kashmir will witness a rare celestial spectacle tonight as the longest total lunar eclipse in recent history unfolds. The eclipse will begin at 9:58 PM IST with the penumbral phase, followed by the partial phase. The total eclipse, when the Moon will appear blood-red, will last for 82 minutes—from 11:00 PM to 12:22 AM. The phenomenon will conclude by 2:25 AM.
Astronomers confirm that the event will be visible clearly across India, including Jammu and Kashmir, provided skies remain clear. Experts also clarified that the lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye and poses no health hazards.
While scientists highlight the astronomical significance, many religious traditions observe the period as inauspicious and recommend certain restrictions during the Sutak period.
Schools and institutions are not expected to be directly affected, although the rare occurrence has already sparked curiosity among students and astronomy enthusiasts across the region.
