New Delhi, May 14, 2025 – In a solemn ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, senior judges of the Supreme Court, and other dignitaries.
Justice Gavai succeeds Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired on May 13, 2025. With this appointment, Justice Gavai becomes the second Dalit Chief Justice of India, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.
Born on November 24, 1960, Justice Gavai began his legal career in Maharashtra and was elevated to the Bombay High Court in 2003. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in May 2019 and has since contributed significantly to constitutional and civil jurisprudence.
Justice Gavai is set to serve as Chief Justice until November 23, 2025. Legal experts and political leaders across the country have welcomed his appointment, highlighting his integrity, judicial acumen, and commitment to justice.
The swearing-in ceremony was marked by traditional protocol and national pride, celebrating another milestone in India’s judicial history.
