New Delhi, May 14, 2025 — Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was officially sworn in today as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu.
Justice Gavai succeeds Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired on May 13 after serving a distinguished term. With this appointment, Justice Gavai becomes the second Dalit to hold the position of Chief Justice of India, marking a significant moment in the nation’s judicial history.
Born in Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Known for his integrity and commitment to constitutional values, his tenure as CJI is expected to last until November 23, 2025.
