Jammu: The protest march of Public Health Engineering (PHE) daily wagers demanding regularization of their jobs was foiled by police today. The protesting workers, who have been seeking permanent employment for over 20 years, attempted to march towards the city but were stopped by security forces.
As tensions escalated, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the protesters, resulting in injuries to at least five workers. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The daily wagers have been staging protests for months, urging the government to fulfill their long-pending demand for regularization. They allege that despite years of service, they have not been given permanent jobs, leading to financial insecurity.
Union leaders condemned the police action and vowed to continue their struggle until their demands are met. Meanwhile, authorities have urged the protesters to maintain peace and assured that their grievances would be considered.
