Srinagar, March 11: Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah announced on Monday that the government has decided to form a high-level committee for the regularization of daily wagers (temporary wage employees). This committee will be led by the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir and is expected to submit its report within the next six months.
No Relief in Budget, But Hope for a Future Solution
Omar Abdullah stated that the recently presented Jammu and Kashmir budget did not include any special relief or scheme for daily wagers. However, he assured that efforts would be made to resolve this issue in the upcoming budget.
He said, "When our government was in power, the number of daily wagers in Jammu and Kashmir was 61,000, but now this figure has significantly increased. Considering the current situation, the government has decided to form a committee that will assess the actual status of daily wagers and present a report."
Long-Standing Demand of Daily Wagers
Daily wagers, who have been serving in various departments for the past 20 to 25 years, have been demanding regularization for a long time. They have staged multiple protests due to job insecurity, uncertain wages, and concerns about their future stability.
What Will the Committee Do and Its Potential Impact?
The main objective of the government-formed committee will be to assess the number of daily wagers working in Jammu and Kashmir, their service duration, and their contributions. Based on this, the committee will prepare a report on which categories of employees can be regularized and the financial burden this process would impose on the government.
If the report is prepared within six months and the government accepts it, a concrete policy for daily wagers could be introduced in the next budget.
What Can Daily Wagers Expect?
The daily wagers' community has high hopes from this committee's report. They believe that if the government takes this report seriously, their demands could be fulfilled within the next six months to a year.
Following Omar Abdullah's statement, there has been increased discussion among daily wagers, and they are now eagerly waiting for the government's response on this issue.
