New Delhi, January 8, 2025
In a significant development aimed at bolstering the financial health of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi today. During the meeting, Abdullah highlighted the pressing economic challenges faced by the Union Territory and sought enhanced financial assistance from the central government to accelerate development and welfare programs.

Abdullah emphasized the need for increased allocations under various central schemes to support critical infrastructure projects, including roads, power, healthcare, and education. He also underlined the financial constraints faced by Jammu and Kashmir in implementing welfare programs for marginalized communities and promoting employment generation initiatives.

The Chief Minister requested the inclusion of J&K in special financial packages that could address the unique geographical and political challenges of the region. "Jammu and Kashmir requires additional support to overcome the legacy of disruptions and to achieve balanced economic growth. Enhanced financial aid will not only strengthen the UT’s economy but also ensure the equitable development of all regions," Abdullah stated during the meeting.

Finance Minister Sitharaman assured the Chief Minister that the central government remains committed to the development of Jammu and Kashmir. She highlighted the steps already taken to boost the region’s economy, such as industrial incentives and infrastructure funding. Sitharaman also assured Abdullah of a thorough evaluation of his proposals and said that the Ministry of Finance would collaborate with the UT administration to address its specific needs.

The meeting comes ahead of the Union Budget presentation, which is expected to include key announcements for the region. Observers believe this dialogue underscores the importance of cooperative federalism in addressing the unique needs of states and union territories like J&K.

This interaction marks a critical step in fostering coordination between the central and state governments and showcases a united effort to prioritize the socio-economic upliftment of Jammu and Kashmir.
