In a move aimed at improving healthcare services and addressing public concerns, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, conducted surprise inspections of leading health institutions in Srinagar. The visits were intended to gain firsthand insight into the facilities, services, and challenges faced by patients and hospital staff.
One of the key stops during the inspection was the Bone & Joint Hospital in Barzulla, renowned as a top orthopedic healthcare facility in the region. The Chief Minister, accompanied by Health Minister Sakeena Itoo, senior faculty members, and doctors, visited various sections and wards of the hospital. He interacted directly with patients and their attendants to understand their concerns and experiences.
Inspection of New Hospital Block
The CM also inspected the newly constructed state-of-the-art block of the Bone & Joint Hospital, developed under the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP) with World Bank funding. This modern facility, built with earthquake-resilient technology, will add 160 beds, increasing the hospital's capacity from 150 to 310 beds.
During the visit, Omar Abdullah emphasized the need to expedite the block’s completion by January 2025. The new block is critical for addressing the space crunch caused by a fire in 2022 that reduced the hospital's capacity to 200 beds. “The swift operationalization of this facility is essential for enhancing patient care and alleviating overcrowding,” he stated.
Visit to Children’s Hospital in Bemina
The Chief Minister also visited the 500-bedded Children’s Hospital in Bemina, where he interacted with patients, attendants, and staff. Attendees from remote areas highlighted the lack of accommodations near the hospital. In response, Omar Abdullah directed the authorities to construct a Sarai (inn) to provide temporary lodging for families of patients, ensuring they face fewer hardships.
The hospital staff also brought up challenges in expanding super-specialty facilities due to limited space. Acknowledging their concerns, the CM promised to prioritize space-related issues and address the shortage of medical professionals, including doctors and paramedics, not only at this facility but across the region.
Holistic Approach to Healthcare
The Chief Minister assured the public that his administration is committed to addressing infrastructural and staffing challenges in healthcare. "Strengthening the healthcare system is a top priority, and we will work relentlessly to resolve these issues," he remarked.
The inspections reflect the government’s dedication to improving healthcare accessibility and ensuring that the people of Jammu and Kashmir receive high-quality medical services.
