In preparation for the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024, the Chief Electoral Officer of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir has released a list of alternative documents that voters can use to verify their identity at polling booths. This initiative ensures that eligible voters have multiple options to prove their identity and participate in the democratic process, especially if they do not possess a Voter ID card.
The official notice highlights 12 acceptable documents that can serve as valid identification at polling stations:
1. Aadhaar Card – A widely used identification document.
2. MGNREGA Job Card – For individuals enrolled under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
3. Indian Passport – For voters who hold valid Indian passports.
4. Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR – Recognized for residents under the National Population Register.
5. Driving License – Valid across India.
6. PAN Card – Issued by the Income Tax Department.
7. Pension Document with Photograph – For pensioners as proof of identity.
8. Passbooks with Photograph (issued by Bank/Post Office) – A reliable source for account holders.
9. Health Insurance Smart Card (issued under the Ministry of Labour’s scheme)– Available for insured individuals.
10. Service Identity Cards with Photograph (issued to employees of Central/State Government, PSUs, and Public Limited Companies) – For government and public sector employees.
11. Official Identity Cards (issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs) – Special ID cards for elected representatives.
12. Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card (issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GoI) – For persons with disabilities.
This comprehensive list ensures that voters have multiple ways to confirm their identity, thereby preventing any barriers to voting participation. The election authorities have urged voters to come prepared with any of these documents to ensure a smooth voting process.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu & Kashmir stated that the move is part of an ongoing effort to make the elections more inclusive and accessible, catering to all segments of the population.
