In a fiery statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah firmly opposed the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) and Congress's agenda to restore Article 370, which granted special status to the region before its abrogation in August 2019. Speaking at a political rally, Shah asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would not allow any attempt to reverse the historic decision made by the central government. He emphasized that Article 370 was abrogated to integrate Jammu and Kashmir fully into India, and the BJP would ensure it remains so.
Amit Shah also criticized the JKNC and Congress's demand for the revival of a separate flag for Jammu and Kashmir, calling it an affront to national unity. He argued that bringing back a separate flag and reinstating Article 370 would only lead to further alienation of the region from the rest of the country. "We will never allow a return to the days of a separate constitution, a separate flag, or any other form of special treatment," Shah remarked during his speech.
The abrogation of Article 370 was a key move by the Narendra Modi-led government to streamline the administration of Jammu and Kashmir by revoking its autonomous status. The removal of the article also dissolved Jammu and Kashmir’s separate constitution and allowed Indian laws to be fully implemented in the region. While the decision has faced criticism from some political factions in the region, including the JKNC and Congress, it has been widely supported by the BJP and its allies.
Shah's statements reflect the BJP’s strong stance on national integration and its commitment to keeping Jammu and Kashmir on the same legal and political footing as the rest of India. He emphasized that no political alliance or movement would be able to undo the changes that have been made. The BJP is also expected to make this a key issue in upcoming elections, capitalizing on the sentiment of national unity and development.
